A piece of advice from: Women in Commercial Property Investment

In celebration of International Women's Day 2025, we spoke with some of our amazing women at Mackersy Property about their experiences in the male-dominated arena of commercial property investment. What is it like being a woman in your industry?

Traditionally a male-dominated profession, I do believe facilities management has evolved significantly. Personally, this stems from the exceptional support from our wider Mackersy Property team, our dedicated leaders, and the valuable external relationships we’ve cultivated.

Being a woman in this industry is not only rewarding but also offers opportunities for personal and professional growth. Like any role, regardless of gender, there are challenges but navigating these obstacles makes the experience even more fulfilling.

What advice would you give a woman wanting to get into your industry?

Go for it! If you possess skills such as organisation, clear communication, technical knowledge, an understanding of building compliance, and the ability to problem-solve, you’ll have a solid foundation to succeed in this field. Regardless of gender, always be eager to upskill and expand your expertise. With building-related compliance and regulations continually evolving, staying curious and adaptable is key to thriving within the Facilities Management industry.

Personally, I have grown a lot in having the opportunity to take on leadership roles. Staying relevant and fostering relationships with team members, clients and stakeholders is important. Having great communication and interpersonal skills is key in any role, and aids in overall progression and opportunities.

The commercial property sector offers a wealth of opportunities for individuals who are passionate about the industry and are committed to making a positive impact; it is an industry where perseverance, innovation and strong networking can lead to significant success. We are fortunate to live in an age where there is continued awareness in recognising the value of diverse perspectives and working towards creating more inclusive environments. The advice I would give to individuals as a collective, would be that staying informed on industry trends is important alongside networking and mentoring. This is key within our industry; connections are important in building a strong network and providing both support and guidance. It is important in no matter what role you uphold, that you lead with grace and by example and stay resilient in the face of challenges.
